Description

Suicide First Aid: Understanding Suicide Intervention (SFAUSI) – 1-Day Course

Suicide First Aid: Understanding Suicide Intervention (SFAUSI) is a one-day, Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) accredited training programme designed to increase understanding of suicide and develop the practical skills needed to intervene with someone who may be experiencing thoughts of suicide.

The course provides learners with the knowledge and confidence to recognise when someone may be at risk, understand the factors that can contribute to suicidal thoughts and behaviours, and apply a structured suicide-safety intervention approach. Through a combination of tutor-led learning, group discussion, practical exercises, and audio-visual presentations, participants explore how suicide can be prevented and how timely intervention can help keep people safe.

Key topics include:

  • Understanding suicide, stigma, and the hidden impact of suicide on individuals, families, and communities.
  • Exploring suicidal thoughts, behaviours, and possible contributing factors.
  • Understanding the wider impact of suicide and the importance of partnership working in prevention.
  • Developing confidence to recognise signs of suicide and ask direct questions about suicide.
  • Learning the three-step Suicide-Safety Guide:
    • Recognising suicide and asking about suicide.
    • Understanding options and sources of support.
    • Safeguarding a person at risk and creating suicide safety.
  • Understanding risk assessment approaches and suicide-related behaviours.
  • Promoting personal wellbeing and self-care when supporting others.

By the end of the course, participants will have gained practical suicide intervention skills that can be applied in both professional and personal settings, helping them to support someone experiencing suicidal thoughts and connect them with appropriate help and support.

No previous experience is required, making the course suitable for professionals, volunteers, community members, workplace wellbeing champions, educators, and anyone wishing to develop greater confidence in suicide prevention and intervention.
